After latest press protection of alginates, a seaweed extract that has been shown to limit extra fat absorption by up to 75%, there has been renewed interest in the diet regime tablet Appesat.

This is one of the best outfield trips we have had. I’m really proud to have this ‘reunion’ session with two of my ex-students from Curtin Advertising, Estar Rino D’Hasyah (currently marketing and corporate communications champion for CIMB bank), and Deanson Lee (our fresh Curtin graduate who has just join Mindshare’s digital team). I’m elated to learn how well they are doing for their career.

Estar is one of those students who is good at leaving you with the ‘forget me not’ impression. A really bright student who knows exactly how to make things happen and get things done. This talent of his can be evident in the way he does projects and presentations. Check out the Estar below when he was still an undergrad at Curtin.

Deanson Lee has been mentioned quite a number of times on strongerhead.com. He has been through a few modules with me, and I can see his growth and development since year 1 in terms of his strategic thinking and maturity of his mindset towards his career establishment. I’m really happy that he managed to land himself with a big corporation in just within 4 months since from his graduation.

For those who didn’t get a chance to meet them in person, I would like to share some of the key take outs from the sessions.

Have a goal
Your target might change, your goals might evolve, but it can only do so if you have one to begin with. It is important to have a goal because it acts as your compass that gives you direction when you are lost. Without it, you might not know what to do next.

For instance, Estar wanted to work as a creative since the age of 17. He ended up being a suit for 2 years instead. On his 3rd year, he got an offer which he couldn’t resist at CIMB. And that is the place where he got to see his real calling. However, if he had not had a goal initially, he would not have discovered where his real strength lies and what should be his next career move.

Deanson wanted to be part of an advertising agency, but ended up in a media agency, Mindshare, where he discovered his passion for digital strategies.

Yes, you may not end up with where you wanna go, but it gets you started.

Resume writing

Keep it short
Keep your resume really short and snappy. You only have 30 seconds – maximum 2 minutes to impress via your resume. Keep it within one page if possible. In any case, most people will only glance through the first page.

Writing style
Stay concise and be consistent. Mosquitoes can kill. For instance, “realize VS realise”, did you realize the use of both American and British spelling within the same write up. Such inconsistency can cause you your chances to be interviewed.

Pay negotiation
Get an auditor to show you the way on how to negotiate for a better pay.

Never think about the money in the beginning
According to Estar, it is so easy to get headhunted when you are really good at doing what you do. Just focus on being good at what you do, instead of worrying about life without a job, you be enjoying life with exponential discretionary income you can have to spend.

He took an internship role for $400 per month to start his career going. Yijun, one of the students who attended this session, asked if he was given a choice to kick start his career again, how would he have done it differently. He said, he would have done it in the exact same fashion. Without that internship role, he would not have gotten to where he is today. Look at the bigger picture. Where the experience, the skills and the learning will take you in the future. That’s the place where they will show you the money. Not now. Not at your present situation where you do not have anything to prove your worth yet.

Just completed another Integrated Marketing Commiunications module with MIS DSMM 1st intake part time students.

They are a fun batch to have, and i will definitely missed them all. i still remember we had our very first session on Valentine’s Day. The ‘LOVE’ they demonstrated during class was excellent. And they refused to allow me to knock off 15 mins earlier for them even on V-day. Their energy level is terrific. And on our last lesson, one of the students even suggested that they are open to come back for an additional class if i am not able to cover everything by last night.

Last evening, apart from the revision session for their exams that we have had, we also had an hour conversation on a topic about to further your studies or not to further your studies.

Let me summarised it below and i hope that will be of benefit to you guys.
- If you pull out a price chart for educational fee for the last 10 – 20 years, you would have realise that the trend has always been up. it’ll never come down. For those who are seriously thinking of getting your degree, the sooner you enroll, the lower price you be enjoying.

- Whatever modules you are going to enroll yourself into, choose something that you enjoy studying. Makes your journey less painful.

- After you have enrolled into the course, BITE THE BULLET and make sure you see through it till the end of the tunnel. No matter what happens, you are better off with a degree cert. As soon as you have your degree, in terms of educational level, you are quite on par with all those who has a degree.

- Which University to choose from? Refer to http://strongerhead.com/how-to-choose-your-university/ for more infor and details.

Here’s to the folks whom we took our class photo with.
Darren Zee; Janson Hong; Anthony Goh; Zulkeflee; Ishaizam; Jesslyn Lau; Martin Pang; Randy Tan; Eric Yong; Yeo Wee Aik; Ng Xue Qian (Elva); Candy Lim; Fion Chiai; Koh Yi Ting; Jason Tan Strongerhead; Marcus Tan; Lee Tiong Kon (Don); Tan Yongwen; Frankie Siow; Ang Joo Sing; Roy Koh; Jeffrey Yap

Stay in touch and feel free to drop me any comments or feedback with regards to your classroom experience with Jason Strongerhead on http://strongerhead.com/category/testimonial-write/

Are you more alive at the beginning of your work day or towards end of your work day?

Did you we set our alarm to ring at 6.45am? As soon as your alarm set off, you hit the snooze button just to catch another 5 – 10 more minutes of sleep. Finally, you get up, shower, or maybe skip shower cause you are running out of time, get dressed in your working attire, grab some breakfast if you have the time, and get in gear for the daily punishment called rush hour.

Once you hit office, you got to deal with your vendors, your suppliers, your colleagues, your customers and your boss sent by the devil to rub you the wrong way. But work life goes on, acting busy, hiding mistakes, smile when given mission impossible (if you know what I mean). Constantly argue with your conscience but agrees with your bosses. And during ‘massacred festival’, known as restructuring or downsizing or laid off that happened every now and then, you give sigh of relief when the ax falls on other heads.

Back home, you eat, watch TV, surf the net. You do not wish to head for bed but you need to because you got to prepare for tomorrow’s rush hour again.

Are we slowly killing ourself so slowly that we barely notice it ourself?

Are we letting it happen to us?

If not, how do we get out of this shitty life?

Unfortunately, we all need money to survive. But how much is enough, that’s the key to freedom. To get out of your shitty life, to liberate ourself, it will have to begin in our minds. Maybe you can start by asking yourself these questions.

- Do you know you have the power to choose if you wish to lead a shitty life or a better life?

- Can you stop impressing others with your possessions?

- Do you know that you actually need much lesser than you thought?

Quite uncanny way to end the class. Had always ended class lesson in ‘style’, with lots of photo taking, a lot of sharing about students’ career developments and insights into career progression and planning. As such, for the first time, i managed to end the class really early.

I must say, majority of the students in this class are somewhat more exams focused oriented. I guess all they want out of this module and experience is to clear this subject and get their paper qualification. Probably they do not see any other value that the lecturers could offer besides providing crystal clear examination tips. But at least, they know what they want in that aspect.

In any case, I am glad to know some of them in this class. People like Jerlyn Tan, Clarence Choo, and a few other energetic and driven individuals (I got to admit I was not able to recall the names of these guys. My bad.).

Thankfully, I managed to take a photo with them, which helps me to remember these folks. Not the full strength but I these folks managed to make their numbers count.

All the best to your exam.

I came across an article on graduates’ expected salary range, from 2011 Graduate Employment Survey (GES), an annual survey that crunches the salary data of fresh graduates who have just entered the workforce.

It looks pretty good. But one have to take note that the amount includes CPF from your employers as well as your own contributions, and all other benefits have been costed in.

From their survey, Law degree holders came out tops, with the median monthly salary hovering at a whopping S$5,000 for fresh graduates.

Business & Accountancy: In the 2011 EOC survey, 32% of Business undergraduates and 44.8% of Accountancy majors expected to earn between S$2,500 and S$2,999 in their first job.

Computing: Computing students expected to pocket in between S$2,800 and S$3,ooo monthly.

Engineering:Engineering undergraduates found themselves getting median wages from S$2,850 to S$3,000.

Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences: Despite their creative mindsets, most Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences undergraduates had a relatively rational and modest outlook when it came to pay expectations with 42.7% expecting between S$2,500 to S$2,999 for their first pay check.

Top 10 Average Gross Monthly Salaries

Note: All SMU programmes listed here are 4-year courses and awards degrees with no awards, merit, high merit, cum laude and above. ‘Cum Laude’ means ‘With honour’

1. NUS Bachelor Laws (LLB) (with honours) – S$5,037

2. SMU Information Systems Management (Cum Laude and above) – S$4,294

3. NUS Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) – S$4,016

4. SMU Economics (Cum Laude and above) – S$3,999

5. NUS Bachelor of Computing (Information Systems) – S$3,911

6. NUS Bachelor of Business Administration (with honours) – S$3,871

7. SMU Business Management (Cum Laude and above) – S$3,777

8. NUS Bachelor of Arts (Architecture) – S$3,677

9. SMU Accountancy (Cum Laude and above) – S$3,671

10. SMU Information Systems Management – S$3,637

The article was originated from: http://sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/expected-actual-salaries-much-did-peers-actually-earn-024038323.html

So where do you stand? From the article above, does that mean you are only worth that amount? Or if you are not from one of those schools, does that mean you are worth lesser than the median salary in your respective field?

I am not from any of the schools above, but I did pretty well for my career. My secret recipe for doing well is to not look at the money. As soon as i do that, i stop doing well. What do i mean, some might ask. Is this a crazy thought?

Now, imagine you are looking for a lawyer, would you prefer to look for one who is busy counting how much he is making every day, every moment, or you are hoping to get one who is busy finding way to win cases for his clients?

If you are looking for a doctor, do you wish to find a doctor who is busy counting how much money he is making every day or you are hoping to get one who is busy taking care of his patients’ needs, and constantly improving himself and finding ways and means to treat his patients?

I might not know how else to put it across to you. But one thing i realise, when you start to focus on the money, it can become a mental block, an obstacle that will stops you from making more money. And we can’t help it. After giving our best, at the end of the day, we are only making this little. You be thinking if it is worth it. Or you might be thinking, since i am only paid this much, why should i give my best. And for some, i will only work for them if they pay me the median salary. Which will most likely turns out to be a worst case scenario for them. They will slow down their career progression because of money.

So what should you be doing?

Focus on being really good, as in REALLY REALLY GOOD at what you do.

The best lawyers, doctors, lecturers, speakers, engineers, architects, marketers, they do not know exactly how much they are making. Yes, they do have a rough idea how much, but they won’t be able to tell you exactly how much they are making. Because they are too busy focusing on polishing their craft, skills, work, whatever you want to call it. All they want to do is to produce the best results, outcome, and bring as much satisfaction to the people (ie: their customers, their bosses) they are serving as possible.

When you are really good at what you do, you have a better chance to make your customers happy & satisfied with your services. When your customers are happy, you will have more customers. More customers mean more businesses. More businesses mean more money.

You might be thinking, that will only apply if you are a freelancer or doing your own business. But even if you are a salaried worker, think like a business man. When you are really good at what you do, you will have a better chance to make your customers happy. When your customers are happy, you will help your boss gain more customers. More customers mean more businesses. More businesses means more money. More money for the company should mean more money to pay you as salary.

You might be thinking what if you do not handle any customers. It works the same way too. If you are really good at what you do, you will impress your bosses. When your bosses are impressed, they will give you are responsibilities and a bigger role. A bigger role and bigger responsibility should mean more money for you.

If you are very good at what you do, I mean REALLY VERY GOOD, and yet your boss is not paying you more, then what are you still doing at that company? Anyway, that is another issue and topic altogether that deserves another posting as a topic on its own.

In any case, focus on being REALLY GOOD at what you do. Finding more money is not going to be your issue.

Do you think everyone is doing the same thing? I dare to say, not everyone is thinking or building their career with this frame of mind. Which is the majority of the workforce are struggling to make more money.

And I’m a contrarian. I like to do what others are not doing or thinking. To me, doing the same thing and sharing the same frame of thoughts as the majority, chances are I will be having the same outcome as them, getting low pay. If I want a different outcome, does it make sense to not do and think what they are doing? Only then, i would have a better chance to achieve results that is going to turn out differently from the rest.

You might be wondering out there if there’s such thing known as the prescribed resume template or format or structure (whichever you call it) that will get a job.

For the old birds, this will probably be deemed as a ‘joke’. The secret behind resume writing is “there’s no secret formula”.

The resume template that helped your friend got a job, might not be the template that will help you get yours too. The resume template that many people uses and got a job, you be surprise it might not work magic for you. Because job hunting is an ART, NOT SCIENCE. Every recruiter has their own definition of what is a good resume.

However, if you wish to come up with something that will catch the eyes of your potential recruiter, you need to do two things.

1) Understand the industry / company that you are applying.

2) Create a resume that would have deem as creative base on the context of the industry or company, so that it will stands out.

For example: If you are in advertising, you know that all the resume formats and templates from the internet are not going to work. If yours looks like one of those, then you know, it will not stand out. Thus, making your format totally different from the ones you see on the internet will give you a better chance of standing out.

General Tips: Be different (For more infor, visit http://strongerhead.com/be-differen/)

If you insist of having a template, visit googlepleasehire.me, or simply search ‘resume templates’, or narrow your search to ‘award winning resume templates / samples’ on Google.

As you are writing your resume, think about the person you are writing, and use your imagination, role play in your head, what could you write that will catch the attention of that person, and what might impress that person. This is far more important than an award winning resume format.

For more infor, you may visit strongerhead.com and search for ‘resume’, ‘be different’, and ‘interview’. There are articles on resume writing (ie: http://strongerhead.com/how-to-sell-yourself-as-fresh-grads-resume-writing-tips/) and interviews that you might find it helpful.
