How to look for a job without working experience

That’s what I am going to talk about next Monday at Curtin University for their Post Graduation ceremony.

One of the biggest concerns among all fresh graduates is the lack of relevant working experience. Open up the newspaper classified page, most of the job openings require you to have relevant working experience. Minimum 2-3 years of working experience. How the hell would a fresh grad get 2-3 years of working experience?

FIRSTLY, do not be disheartened. Understand why all hirers are looking for people with job experience.

Reason no 1: They needed assurance that you can do the job.
Reason no 2: They are worried you might be a wrong hire.

Solution is, there are other ways beside relevant working experience to proof that you can do the job and you are the right hire. Such as your attitude, your knowledge, your passion and hunger for the job. People who are hungry and passionate for the job tends to be better hire, and learn much faster too than those with relevant working experience but without your hunger and passion.

SECONDLY, do not give up. There’ll still be many who would not buy your ‘proof’ that you can do the job and you are the right hire. This happens to those with 2 – 3 years of working experience too. Not just for fresh grads.

Solution is: Just keep asking till someone says YES. Because someone will say YES eventually. Go and ask all successful working executives, and ask them how they got their first job. Everyone goes through the same ordeal, and ultimately there’s always someone out there who will say YES. You just have to find them, and the only way to find them is to keep finding till you find them. Once you stop finding, is the day you stop your success from happening.
