What to do when you graduate

X’mas is coming. I am eagerly waiting for 2012’s arrival with open arms. I know I’ll be older, but I’ve a lot of hope that 2012 will be a much better year for me which is keeping my dreams going.

How about you? what’s your dream? Or goals?

For some, especially for my students or graduating students, my guess is that you all wish to be able to land yourself a job with promising career prospect.

If you have this goal but not sure what you should be doing now, here’s some tips.

For those who have graduated, here’s my suggestion for your consideration:

–          Shortlist 5 – 10 companies of your choice

–          Have your resume ready for those companies

–          Use creativity to break through the clutter to ensure your resume catches your potential employer’s attention

–          Leverage on ‘integrated marketing tools’ to market yourself (social media, direct marketing, PR, and WOM)

For those who are about to graduate in near next year, Jan or Feb, you might want to do the same as above. Because by the time you have your shortlist ready, and resume ready, January 2012 has probably arrived. Time to send it just before or right after Chinese New Year. By the time your rounds of interviews is completed, your final exams are probably over.

For those who still have some way to go, whenever you have the time, get yourself an internship role with any corporations, ideally, join your dream companies. If you do not know where to start finding your internship positions, here’s what you can do:

–          Shortlist 5 – 10 companies of your choice

–          Have your resume ready for those companies

–          Use creativity to break through the clutter to ensure your resume catches your potential employer’s attention

–          Leverage on ‘integrated marketing tools’ to market yourself (social media, direct marketing, PR, and WOM)

Happy hunting for your dream job.
