Do you believe you can be the next Director? Do you believe you can be the most valued employee of your organisation? Do you believe you can make $100k a month? Very often, the answer is NO.
If I say YOU CAN MAKE IT, you’ll not believe me. You will say, come on LAH. I don’t even make $3k now, how to make $100k? If I ask, how about just $10k? You will say HOW CAN??? Please Lor!
Why is that so?
YOUR ANSWER IS INFLUENCED BY YOUR BELIEF. If you wish to be a director of an organization, to become the most valued employee of your organization, to make $100k a month, or even $10k a mth, you have got to be a peak performer in whatever you are doing. However, if you believe you are good for nothing, if you think you are never good enough, you will NEVER BE ABLE TO REACH YOUR PEAK PERFORMANCE LEVEL.
So, can I say that if you have the right belief, you would then have the confidence to achieve your goals?
Thus, I urge every one of you not to question your ability to achieving your goals. Instead you should question your belief. Write down your beliefs. Examine those beliefs by asking yourself FIVE questions pertaining to each belief that you have pen down.
1) Who gave me this belief? My parents? My Friends? School? Or did I develop this belief myself?
2) What kind of life am I living with this belief?
3) What kind of life am I not living with this belief?
4) How does this belief limit me?
5) Is this a belief I want to keep because it is useful, or is it a belief I want to get rid of because it limits me?
Whenever I am in doubt about myself, whenever I am not getting the results I am pursuing, I tend to take a step back, ask myself these set of questions to reevaluation my standing. Let’s look at one example of a belief that has been stopping me from getting what I was hoping to achieve: I can never be an average distinction student in school.
Who gave me this belief?
Since young, I often heard from my relatives saying “You are so stupid. You are not even half as smart as your sister”. My friends around me think that we are just not those who can excel in our studies. I begin to accept that I am just not cut out for studying.
What kind of life am I living with this belief?
I failed my Secondary One (normal stream, where you will study five years before you get your O’ Levels).
What kind of life am I not living with this belief?
I am not able to progress to secondary two. All my relatives despise me further. I became a laughing stock among my schoolmates.
How does this belief limit me?
The limitation is obvious. It makes me think that I can never experience academic success.
Is this a belief I want to keep because it is useful, or is it a belief I want to get rid of because it limits me?
HELL NO. Definitely not a belief I want to keep. Not only do I want to make it to secondary two, I want to do so well that I get promoted from the normal stream to the express stream (where you will study four years instead of five years to get your O’ levels), which will get me to graduate at the same time as my Sec One school mates. And to do that, I have to achieve an average score of 70% across all 9 subjects.
After I had altered my belief, you be surprised with the outcome. I am still as playful as I used to be. I go out to play skateboard with my friends every weekend. However, the only difference is that I pay attention in class to ensure I understood everything the lectures were teaching for every lesson. I do my homework diligently, and I revise for my exam, something I never do in the past.
Can you see how my new belief has help me to gain control of my life? It greatly influences my actions, making me take personal responsibility for all outcomes. When you operate at that level, you are definitely a peak performer. As for me, not only did I manage to achieve an average distinction in school, my results had top my class and my school, making me the top student of the year for Sec One.
